Details of step 1 , Step 2 of mobile web design experiments on this website

.mobi., Xhtmlmp, wap, what !!!

If you are viewing this page then you are viewing it through a browser - such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari and others. The browser allows you to view and do stuff on the page. There are also many different browsers within mobile devices e.g. on my N73 I currently have the default browser and the Opera Mini Browser

Each browser displays web pages in different ways. So Web and mobile Web committees have been working together to develop common standards and languages to help designers and mobile device users see the web pages as smoothly as possible. For example you can already view this website on a mobile - its ok but its not great !!

There are some great reference sources which guide you through how to design mobile web pages and take you through all the different languages, standards and other things to think about. Will be using and referring to these as I start designing pages:

  • .mobi Web Developer guide This is a very comprehensive guide designed for developers who are already familiar with web development in general, but now want to try their hand at mobile
  • Mobile Web book by Cameron Moll, published in last couple of weeks, it assumes you have some basic understanding of Xhtml and CSS but if you're new to web design completely, this will help as well.

Mobile web design, getting started

WAP 2.0 is latest standard - means that websites can be written in a few common languages - WML, XHTML-MP, XHTML-Basic and CHTML. More about these later - as I start coding, will explain so that can see the examples along the way.

.mobi is a web address on a mobile device e.g http://www.aydindesign.mobi. a .mobi web address needs to be registered and bought just like any .com, .edu, .org web addresses. There is a .mobi initiative which recognised that for the majority of users accessing web pages on a mobile device, it has not been a great experience to date, so they have developer community, information and requirements for a .mobi site

I have registered the domain name http://www.aydindesign.mobi and will also document step-by-step process of creating it.

Don't have time to look, can I download the code?

This downloads page will provide all the coding used to create the content or better still, use the wiki or you could go and build a mobile site using Winksite   instead.
